Background

The game takes place in 3063, during the Civil War era of the BattleTech universe. Following the defeat of the Clans during the Clan Invasion of 3050-3061, the Federated Commonwealth is launched into civil war between Katherine Steiner-Davion's (Katrina Steiner) Loyalists and Victor Steiner-Davion's Allies.

On Carver V, the ruler of the planet (Mandrin Cho of House Liao) has been killed by House Davion and House Steiner forces. Colonel David Renard and his aide Major Susan Kelly separate their forces into Steiner and Davion containment zones respectively. Several Steiner outposts are taken by a bandit army consisting mainly of tanks and light Mechs, however Katrina Steiner does not want to send more house troops to Carver V, and instead hires a "neutral" mercenary force to go there and deal with the bandits.

Campaign 1

While under contract from House Steiner, the mercenary commander takes orders from Colonel Renard and Ambassador Yee, House Steiner's representative on Carver V. The missions start off with taking out groups of bandits and taking back the captured Steiner outposts, but eventually a bandit mobile HQ is captured, revealing the bandit leader to be Choung Vong, a Liao officer who led a failed invasion of Carver V in 3057. Steiner intel says he is still on active duty, however data from the HQ vehicle says he was discharged. Colonel Renard orders for a number of missions to be carried out in Liao and bandit territories, destroying various tactical objectives. When the bandit headquarters are breached, Vong calls for reinforcements from House Liao, who ignore his requests.

Campaign 2

Renard calls for a unit of veteran MechWarriors to come to Carver V, despite the bandit threat being eliminated. Major Kelly also calls for Davion reinforcements, including Clan Mechs and Bondsman captured during her tour of the Clan homeworlds.

The mercenary commander is hired by Mandrissa Anita Cho, the widow of Mandarin Cho. She has a terminal illness and wants the planet back for her son Jason to rule before she dies. In the first mission working for House Liao, you also meet Baxter the leader of a resistance group on Carver V. The mercenaries do a number of missions in Steiner and Davion territory, including inciting conflict between the two houses. Baxter and his partisans assist on some missions, with various tanks. Eventually, Captain Jason Cho's inexperience at commanding and his constantly backfiring plans cause Mandrissa Cho to call for peace negotiations between Steiner and Liao. Whilst escorting Captain Cho to talk to Renard, Renard agrees they can have peace if Captain Cho kills the mercenaries. Captain Cho happily agrees to this, however he is the one who is killed in combat by the mercenaries instead.

Campaign 3

The mercenaries work for Baxter and the partisans now, as well as Major Kelly who has agreed to help, however she won't deploy her forces against Steiner or Renard, who was her friend. The mercenaries have a number of missions against Steiner and Liao, including rescuing survivors from a damaged Davion dropship and liberating a civilian starport. The mercenaries attack the Liao palace and Steiner high command to kill Mandrissa Cho and Renard respectively, however Cho kills herself before the mercenaries arrive. Baxter becomes the new ruler of Carver V, which is renamed to Liberty.
